The Bee Guardians of the Crest Project offers a nature positive solution to restore biodiversity, enhance food security, and improve livelihoods in Rwanda’s Congo Nile Crest, with a focus on the Nyungwe and Gishwati-Mukura Biosphere Reserve buffer zones. By integrating inclusive beekeeping with agroforestry, the project aims to regenerate ecosystems, mitigate land degradation, and support pollinator recovery ultimately boosting crop yields and strengthening climate resilience. The project will deploy IoT-enabled smart hives for real-time bee health monitoring to reduce colony collapse and utilise drone-assisted pollination mapping to optimise ecosystem restoration. A mobile based visual VR training platform will deliver accessible education to 1,500 women, youth, refugees, and persons with disabilities. Additionally, the project will plant 7,500 nectar-rich indigenous trees like Umurama (Erythrina Abyssinica) which enhance soil fertility and biodiversity while reducing deforestation.
