Resilience through regeneration

Itanya Africa Group prioritises regenerative farming practices that work in harmony with nature by promoting biodiversity, improving soil health, and enhancing ecosystem resilience.

Country: Kenya
Lead organisation: Itanya Africa Group

The goal of this project was to enable female smallholder farmers from the lower eastern part of Kenya to start practicing regenerative farming that work in harmony with nature, with the aim of increasing biodiversity, improving nutrition and soil health, and increasing their economic output. The Itanya Africa Group used behavioural science and human-centred capacity building on sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices, as well as financial tools, to ensure that farmer solutions were relevant and aligned with the local context and needs of the communities. The social benefits anticipated included increased financial capacity and investment knowledge that will lead to more children in school, better housing, increased nutrition and accessible healthcare. The project also expected improvement in soil health, more crop and tree cover, and increased biodiversity.

Key progress highlights:

  • Supported 885 people and mobilised an investment of $ 5,000.
  • 177 people trained on regenerative agriculture, syntropic agroforestry and water infrastructure development.
  • 17 young men trained in water pan construction and maintenance, contributing to youth economic empowerment.
  • 1.01 hectares of land rehabilitated and established as a demonstration farm, serving as a practical learning hub for sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Set up 43 vertical gardens in households, encouraging climate-smart agricultural practices and enhancing food security.
  • Harvested 82 bags of compost manure for use in the demonstration farm, boosting soil fertility and supporting sustainable crop production.
  • Constructed 3 water pans, improving water access for irrigation and household use.
