Organic fertiliser production

Green Ethiopia transforms urban organic waste into affordable fertiliser, restoring soil health and creating green jobs.

Lead organisation: Green Ethiopia
Country: Ethiopia

Green Ethiopia delivers a circular solution transforming organic waste into affordable, high-impact fertiliser using microbial technology and farmer-led innovation. The initiative boosts yield by 20%, cuts water uses by 30%, and restores degraded land empowering more than 2,000 farmers, 60% of whom are women and creating 150 green jobs in composting and waste collection. This nature-positive initiative will combine traditional farming wisdom with technology to convert 3,600 tons of urban organic waste annually into high-quality fertilisers, driving three core impacts: revitalising degraded soils by restoring organic matter and microbial life, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by preventing 1,440 tons of CO₂e from decomposing waste, enhancing climate resilience with water-saving formulas that reduce irrigation.

Using advanced composting that accelerates decomposition by 80% and granulation technology that reduces labour by 20%, the project will enhance nutrient efficiency. To scale impact, Green Ethiopia will partner with municipalities for waste collection, agricultural cooperatives for farmer training, and government agencies to align with national soil health strategies.
