Scaling Up Locally Led Adaptation: Africa Dialogue 2

Dialogues will be held across three regions to scale up locally-led adaptation globally

At the COP26 Presidency’s Climate and Development Ministerial, the world’s most vulnerable countries stated loud and clear the need for radical improvements in their access to climate finance, and the need to increase support for locally led adaptation. Similar calls have also come through the Climate Vulnerable Forum and G7 meetings.

In partnership with the UN COP26 Presidency, Race to Resilience and the Adaptation Action Coalition, eight partners are collaborating to build on this momentum to support the scale-up in locally-led adaptation globally.

Six peer-to-peer regional dialogues will be held across Asia-Pacific, Africa, and the Caribbean and Latin America.

The COP26 Presidency is pressing donors to improve and scale up their adaptation commitments, including support to locally-led adaptation and access to finance. Locally-led adaptation is a central focus for the incoming Presidency, and in the lead up to COP, donors will convene to discuss how to improve adaptation financing at the local level.

The dialogues will offer a chance for countries and non-state actors to learn from each other and showcase the real potential for locally-led adaptation via direct and enhanced direct access models.

Dialogue dates

The regional dialogues on scaling up locally led adaptation will be held in the following regions on the following dates:

Africa Dialogues: convened by Environment and Development Action in the Third World, International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), SouthSouthNorth, Sustainable Development Initiative, and World Resources Institute (WRI).

  • Dialogue 1: Monday, 6 September 2021, 10am-12pm Central Africa time
  • Dialogue 2: Tuesday, 12 October 2021, 10am-1pm Central Africa time

The dialogues will feature keynote speeches showing how locally-led adaptation is at the heart of COP26’s adaptation campaign, group discussion and breakout sessions where state and non-state actors can share examples of financing locally-led adaptation. Each dialogue will cover different issues so participants are encouraged to attend both in their region where possible.

These dialogues are presented by the Adaptation Action Coalition, the COP26 UN High-Level Champions and the Race to Resilience, in association with the Caribbean Natural Resources InstituteCentro para la Autonomía y Desarollo de los Pueblos IndígenasEnvironment and Development Action in the Third WorldHuairou CommissionInternational Centre for Climate Change and DevelopmentInternational Institute for Environment and DevelopmentSave the Children AustraliaSouthSouthNorthSlum Dwellers International and World Resources Institute.
